Algeria provides assistance to African countries for appropriate use of antimicrobials

ALGIERS- The office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Algeria affirmed Monday that Algiers Pasteur Institute (IPA) provided its assistance to the African laboratories in terms microbiology for an appropriate use of antimicrobials.

Speaking on the occasion of the National Day Against Antimicrobials (November 22nd) and the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, organized from 18 to 24 November, Dr. Houria Khelifi from WHO’s office said that the UN organization has chosen Pasteur Institute to provide assistance to the African laboratories in terms of microbiology in order to fight against the resistance to antimicrobials.

In this respect, Dr. Khelifi stressed the importance of this operation for IPA, notably following the adherence of Algeria to the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) in 2020, and the implementation of a national antimicrobial consumption surveillance system, followed by the conduction of surveys in this field, in addition to encouraging scientific researches.

For his part, the representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Karim Boughalem affirmed his support to WHO’s efforts to fight against the resistance to antimicrobials for the protection of the human, animal and vegetal health, notably in low income countries, underlining the technical assistance provided to the organization in terms of surveillance and prevention against this resistance.

Algeria committed to implementation of action plan to fight against antimicrobial resistance

ALGIERS-The Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saïhi reaffirmed Monday Algeria's commitment to fighting against antimicrobial resistance through the implementation of a national action plan.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Director of Prevention and Health Education at the Ministry, Djamel Fourar at a study day held as part of the celebration of the National Day against Antimicrobial Resistance, Saïhi said that Algeria is committed to the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
Like other countries, Algeria reiterates its commitment to fight against antimicrobial resistance through the implementation of the national action plan developed for this purpose, including the celebration of this national day to institutionalize it and The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), stated the minister.
According to Saihi, Algeria also faces this problem which is one of the most dangerous threats to global health, food security, and sustainable development. This event is an opportunity to recall the efforts made and progress achieved in this area.
Antimicrobial resistance has become, since 2019, a new indicator in the monitoring of development goals, recalled the minister.
This national day is an opportunity to assess, inform and raise awareness of the importance of the proper use of antimicrobials, including antibiotics.
The first aim of the action plan to fight against antimicrobial resistance plan is to brief citizens and human and animal health workers on the problem of antimicrobial resistance and raise awareness of its impact.
The minister also emphasized the importance of Algeria's participation in the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS), through the Algerian Network for Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance and the Pasteur Institute of Algeria (IPA), being a reference laboratory, in addition to the surveillance and monitoring of this resistance in animals through the mechanism device set up by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Saidi confirmed the availability of guides for the management of tuberculosis, AIDS, hepatitis, and malaria, as well as a guide for the proper use of antibiotics.
The proper use of antimicrobials requires the implementation of the national strategy within healthcare facilities, through priority actions to control the consumption of antimicrobials, especially antibiotics and antibacterials.
